Included this year with your Combine ticket is admission to Ignite Bloomington 18. The 18th episode of this Bloomington community event will be the closing event for The Combine on Saturday, April 7, at The Bishop. The event is also open to the public with an entry fee of $5.
Ignite is a series of 5-minute presentations, where each presenter must use 20 slides which auto-advance every 15 seconds. Ignite events take place all over the world, and have been coordinated locally since 2010 with volunteers from the Bloomington nonprofit Humanetrix Foundation, Inc., who also organize The Combine.
Each presenter will speak passionately on a topic that inspires them, and may also inspire, educate and entertain the audience. Many of the participants have been creatives and individuals from the tech industry, but Ignite presenters have been lawyers, entrepreneurs and educators as well. Speakers just need an idea to share and the willingness to get up in front of a room and tell everyone about it.
“Anyone can talk about something for five minutes,” said Danise Alano-Martin, president of the Humanetrix Foundation. “Ignite is about sharing something you’re passionate about. We’ve run a wide gamut of topics from within the community over the past eight years of events.”
Presentations have included participating in a demolition derby, participating in roller derby, how to pick locks, surviving cancer, living with Asperger’s, fashion blogging, an introduction to the world’s first female surgeon, an elementary class science project, and more.
The aim is to showcase the diversity of interests in the community through short bursts of high-energy presentations. The global Ignite founders explain it this way on their website (http://ignitetalks.io): “Ignite’s mission is ‘Everyone Speaks.’ We believe that public speaking builds confidence in individuals and that events like Ignite build community.”
Confirmed presenters so far for Ignite Bloomington 18 include Abeer Bar, Mike Beam, Jeremy Goodrich, Cassaundra Huskey, David Martin, Sue Reynolds, Keirsten White, and Danielle Wolter Nolan, and topics range from “The Best Advice I’ve Ever Received,” to “Podcast to Stark Raving Fans.”
Organizers still have space for one or two presenters. Interested presenters can go to http://bit.ly/ignitebtown18 and fill out the short form. Space is limited, if you’re accepted for this event, the Ignite team will reach out to you.
And, don’t forget, your Combine badge includes Ignite Bloomington 18! For others not attending The Combine, tickets to Ignite can be purchased on Eventbrite.
